What is a bassinet?

A bassinet is designed to enable your baby to sleep beside you for the first few months of life. They can be used from birth and are compact, lightweight, and mobile. Easily moved from room to room, they’re usually placed beside your bed for convenient monitoring throughout the night.

It’s up to your family whether you decide to use a bassinet or crib—both are safe sleeping options when used correctly.

There are different types of bassinets to choose from:

  • Freestanding bassinets with legs
  • Portable bassinets
  • Bassinets with wheels
  • Side sleepers or co-sleeper bassinets
  • Convertible bassinets
  • Moses baskets

Do I need a bassinet?

Wondering if a bassinet is necessary? There are many reasons why parents choose to invest in one for their newborn. From safe sleep to monitoring your baby closely day and night, here’s why we recommend a bassinet:

It’s convenient
A bassinet allows you to keep an eye on your little one, no matter where you are in the house. Feeding and comforting your child is also easier—especially if you’re recovering from giving birth or breastfeeding.

It’s portable
Life is busy, especially for new parents. A bassinet gives you flexibility at home and on the go. Whether you have guests or are planning a weekend away, your baby will have a safe place to sleep wherever you are.

It’s a great investment
Though bassinets can be expensive, they’re built to last. Since they’re only used for a few months, they often remain in excellent condition and can be passed on to other children or friends—just be sure to replace the mattress and sheets.

It can be customized to suit your lifestyle
Many bassinets come with add-on features like removable storage, a sunshade hood, or a mosquito net.

It won’t take up much space
If you live in an apartment or have limited space, a bassinet is a more compact option than a crib. They’re small enough for bedrooms and easy to move around the home.

The cozy element
Thanks to their compact size, bassinets create a snug sleep space that offers closeness and comfort for your baby.

Where should I put my bassinet?

It’s recommended that your baby sleeps in the same room as you for the first 6 to 12 months, which can reduce the risk of SIDS by up to 50%. The portability of a bassinet means your baby can safely sleep beside you both day and night.

Most parents place the bassinet next to their bed to keep a close eye on their baby. This is a safer alternative to co-sleeping and makes nighttime feeding and comforting easier.

How do I safely put my baby to sleep in a bassinet?

Bassinets are easy to move, but they must be used safely. Never move the bassinet with your baby inside, and always lock the wheels before settling your child.

Safe sleep tips for bassinets:

  • Use a firm, clean, and flat mattress.
  • Only use fitted sheets designed for your bassinet’s size. In winter, securely tuck blankets under the mattress to avoid choking hazards.
  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep—never on their side or stomach.
  • Remove toys, loose objects, and extra blankets from the bassinet before sleep.

How long do babies sleep in a bassinet?

You’ll know it’s time to transition from a bassinet to a crib when:

  • Your baby reaches the maximum height or weight limit of the bassinet.
  • Your baby starts rolling over or trying to push up on their hands—usually between 4 to 6 months, though this varies.

Why won’t my baby sleep in a bassinet?

Even with all the benefits, some babies may struggle to settle in a bassinet. Every baby is different, so here are some expert tips to help:

  • Try placing your baby in the bassinet while they’re drowsy but still awake. This helps them learn to fall asleep independently.
  • Look for common sleep cues like rubbing eyes, yawning, fussing, or clenched fists.
  • Swaddling can help your baby feel secure. Our award-winning Swaddle UP™ is designed to keep your baby’s arms in a natural position for comfort and self-soothing.
  • Once your baby starts to roll over, our Love To Dream™ Transition Bags are the perfect next step—just be sure to move your baby into a crib at this stage.
  • Reduce stimulation before bedtime by dimming lights and establishing a calming nighttime routine.
  • A consistent bedtime routine—like a bath, baby massage, storytime, or lullaby—can help your baby wind down and sleep more soundly.

How do I get my baby to sleep in a bassinet?

Bedtime can be challenging, but a few small changes can make a big difference:

  • Use the bassinet for daytime naps to help your baby associate it with sleep.
  • Our Swaddle UP™ is designed with a hip-healthy fit and ARMS UP™ position to keep your baby comfortable.
  • Try moving the bassinet slightly away from your bed. A little space might help both you and your baby sleep better.

Your questions, answered

What are bassinet seats?

Every parent knows how challenging travelling with a child can be. A bassinet seat is a small bed for infants commonly used on planes. The sleep aid attaches to the bulkhead wall and enables parents to take a break from holding their baby, which is especially helpful on long-haul flights.

Are bassinets safe?

When used correctly, bassinets are a safe sleep option. According to Red Nose Australia, the most common risks associated with bassinet use are incorrect assembly, using blankets instead of a mattress, not leaving enough space above the baby’s head and continuing to use the bassinet when the baby has outgrown it.

To keep your baby safe in a bassinet, make sure to check the following:

  • The bassinet is for short-term use only. Do not use the bassinet once your baby has shown signs of rolling or has reached the maximum weight/height of the bassinet.
  • Always position the bassinet away from potential hazards such as curtains, power points and blinds.
  • Ensure folding legs are locked so they can’t collapse.
  • Always make sure the bassinet is free from loose blankets and toys.

How many bassinet sheets do I need?

We recommend investing in a minimum of three to four bassinet sheets so that you can regularly change them. Bassinet sheets must fit snugly to the mattress. Any loose material can become a choking hazard.

Soft, comfortable and made for a long, dreamy sleep. Our bassinet sheets are crafted from cosy fabrications that are easy to wash, easy to change, and easy on the environment.

Crafted from a durable soft knit with a waterproof coated backing, our bassinet sheets also act as a mattress protector - saving you from having to wash two items.

When to move your baby from bassinet to crib?

Every family is different. You can move your baby from bassinet to crib when it feels right for you, but it’s highly recommended that your child sleeps in the same room for the first six to 12 months.

When your baby starts to show signs of rolling over or exceeds the maximum height/weight of the bassinet, they need to be moved into a crib.

Soft toys should never be placed in the sleeping environment. Soft objects in the cot can be a suffocation risk. For more information, please visit Red Nose Australia, the leading authority on safe sleep.
